Physical Chemistry:

Technical product is crystalline solid with slightly pungent odour.M.p. 215oC.V.p.﹤0.1mPa (20oC).Soluble in water 1370 g/L (22oC).Soluble in acetone 0.16, ethanol 0.65, ethyl acetate 0.14, toluene 0.14, hexane 0.2 (all in g/L, 20oC). Stable to light.

Toxicity:

The oral LD50 is 436-464 mg/kg in mice and 1,510-1,660 mg/kg in rats. Dogs are the most sensitive. The dermal LD50 for glufosinate is about the same as for oral exposures. However, through the skin, glufosinate formulations can be 2.5 times more toxic than glufosinate alone.

Application:

It is a broad-spectrum contact herbicide and is used to control a wide range of weeds after the crop emerges or for total vegetation control on land not used for cultivation. Glufosinate herbicides are also used to desiccate (dry off) crops before harvest.
